Une nouvelle fois, Carus nous comble avec cette passionnante livraison d’œuvres de Händel. Avant de l’envisager sous l’angle qualitatif, abordons celle-ci sous son aspect quantitatif. Sont en effet réunies ici trois compositions significatives de 1713, alors que le musicien, après son séjour italien et toujours en poste à Hanovre, affermit simultanément sa position à Londres, notamment à la cour de la reine Anne, à laquelle un an plus tard va succéder le roi George, premier protecteur du compositeur en Allemagne. C’est donc un témoignage emblématique du nouveau départ de Händel, âgé de moins de trente ans mais déjà en pleine possession d’un génie que tous lui reconnaissent. Ces trois œuvres conçues pour des circonstances officielles sont ici précédées d’une suite de l’opéra Il Pastor Fido, qui avait suivi le triomphe londonien de Rinaldo sans rencontrer un succès identique. Côté interprétation, la précision et l’authenticité que Rademann, ses musiciens et ses chœurs, consacrent habituellement à la musique de Schütz s’enrichit ici de tout l’éclat que méritent les présentes partitions. Tout y est parfaitement à sa place, grâce à des solistes exceptionnels, parmi lesquels on remarquera le contreténor Reginald Mobley qui nous offre un « Eternal source of light divine » d’anthologie. Handel's Utrecht Te Deum HWV 278 was already enthusiastically received at its first performance in 1713 in St. Paul's in London. To celebrate peace after twelve years of Spanish War of Succession, Handel composed a captivating Te Deum and Jubilate. A British national composer was born! The Gaechinger Cantorey, conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann, performed the Te Deum at the brilliant closing concert of the Musikfest Stuttgart 2018. Christina Landshamer, Reginald Mobley, Benedikt Kristjánsson and Andreas Wolf delighted the audience as soloists. The recording begins with an orchestral suite from Handel's opera Il pastor fido, which premiered in November 1712. The Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne from February 1713, also known as "Ode of peace", points to the impending peace of Utrecht with the demand "United nations shall combine" in its final chorus.
