Un battement de timbale ouvre le Premier Concertino pour violon que Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda écrivit en 1829, écho de celui osé par Beethoven dans son propre Concerto plus de vingt ans plus tôt. Pour la suite, plus rien d’une quelconque influence beethovénienne, mais un discours charmant, purement mélodique, de la musique pour plaire à laquelle on ne pourrait pas reprocher son bonheur. Mais une irrésistible envie de tirer les oreilles à Daniel Sepec me prend, qui fait miauler son violon sans vibrato dix-sept minutes durant. Insupportable, même historiquement informée, l’œuvre y voit sombrer ses charmes, d’autant que la direction très formelle de Frieder Bernius n’y s sauve rien. Pourtant Frieder Bernius et sa Hofkapelle Stuttgart n’en sont pas à leur premier disque Kalliwoda : ils avaient jadis gravé pour Orfeo les 5e et 6e Symphonies en les parant d’un romantisme presque sombre que je retrouve justement dans l’orageux Largo qui ouvre la Première Symphonie. Soudain le récit s’anime, on est transporté chez Weber, la forme pour classique qu’elle soit ménage de surprenants épisodes dramatiques que Bernius saisit avec finesse. Discours fluide, harmonies savantes, tout un univers qui existerait à plein si Schubert n’avait déjà fait sa révolution. Impossible d’être encore une fois plus proche de Weber avec l’Introduction et Variations pour clarinette et orchestre de 1844, rhapsodie de clair de lune où menace un orage avant de céder le pas au divertissement, partition de haute fantaisie où brille la clarinette profonde du merveilleux Pierre-André Taillard (Discophilia - Artalinna.com). With this recording, Frieder Bernius once again honors the musical legacy of the Bohemian composer Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of the longstanding court kapellmeister of Donaueschingen on 3 December 2016, the focus is on his instrumental compositions. In addition to the Symphony No. 1, op. 7 – a work that has not been available in a current recording for many years – the CD includes the Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra op. 128 and the Concertino for Violin and Orchestra op. 15. It represents a convincing homage to a composer who foudn his place in the transition between the Classical form of a late Mozart and the Romance form of early Romanticism, between lyrically reflective melodies and a “Sturm und Drang” dramatics as well as between homophonic orchestral tuttis and strict counterpoint.
