Même des œuvres aussi rebattues que les symphonies de Schumann peuvent apparaître neuves pour peu que des interprètes enthousiastes en ravivent les couleurs. Ce nouvel album le démontre grâce à l’élan que le jeune chef Simon Gaudenz insuffle à l’orchestre danois d’Odensee. Tempos vifs et enlevés, effectif plutôt restreint avec des instruments modernes mais un usage limité du vibrato et des timbales sèchement percussives, et volonté affirmée de rendre à l’orchestration si souvent décriée de Schumann brillant et transparence. Le pari est gagné à l’évidence et cette vision qui replace judicieusement Schumann au cœur du premier romantisme, loin des brumes brahmsiennes ou des sonorités pré-wagnériennes suscite notre adhésion. Un Schumann dégraissé, « historiquement informé » mais orchestralement virtuose, voici qui ne peut que nous réjouir. Gageons que l’on n’a pas fini d’entendre le nom de Simon Gaudenz, qui éclaire dans le passionnant entretien qui figure dans le livret d’accompagnement sa convaincante approche des symphonies de Schumann. During recent years the young Swiss conductor Simon Gaudenz has made a name for himself particularly as an interpreter of the classical repertoire. A fresh, new approach against the background of historically informed performance practice characterizes his recordings and concerts. During this same time he was associated with the Symphony Orchestra in the city of Odense on the island of Funen (the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen and Carl Nielsen!), serving as its principal guest conductor. This orchestra, ranking as one of Denmark’s premier orchestras next to the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen, immediately felt that extraordinary things could be realized with this revolutionary wielding the baton. It was agreed to take on Schumann. And what a marvelous result: so fresh, so transparent, so analytic, so captivating – in short: never before have we heard Schumann performed so excitingly.
