La famille Lübeck n’a vraiment pas facilité la vie des musicologues en prénommant trois de ses membres compositeurs Vincent. Celui qui nous intéresse principalement, n’a laissé malgré sa longue vie que quelques impressionnantes pièces pour grand orgue (interprétées ici sur le magnifique orgue baroque de l’église Saint Laurent à Alkmaar (Pays Bas)), quelques pièces pour clavecin et quelques cantates, dont quelques-unes ont été enregistrées. On comprend à l’écoute des pièces d’orgue dans le style grandiose de l’Allemagne du Nord l’influence qu’il a pu avoir sur Jean-Sébastien Bach. Orphelin de père à 1 an, Vincent II fut élevé par son beau-père organiste, qui fut son premier professeur. Il compila à partir de 1691 un recueil manuscrit qui inclut quelques pièces de son défunt père, et ou son fils (Vincent III) ajouta quelques morceaux de son cru, à côté de transcriptions d’airs d’opéra de Keiser. Ce florilège visiblement destiné à l’enseignement (Vincent II était extrêmement réputé comme enseignant et expert en construction d’orgues) contient des airs délicieux qui illustrent une inspiration plus populaire mais tout aussi riche du compositeur. Ils sont interprétés ici au clavecin ou à l’orgue positif (pourvu d’un savoureux jeu de régale) par l’excellent Manuel Tomadin. (Jean-Michel Babin-Goasdoué)

Unfortunately, until recently, the music of Vincent Lübeck (c.September 1654–9 February 1740) was simply regarded as northern German music from the 17th century in the pre-Bach era. This recording is the first edition to include all existing organ and harpsichord compositions by Lübeck as well as a series of previously unknown manuscript pieces. Despite Lübeck’s fame during his long lifetime, few of his organ works are well known, yet his pieces for organ are the most important in his oeuvre. Influenced by Buxtehude and Reincken, Lübeck composed works that were both technically and artistically elaborate with frequent twopedal virtuosic passages, five voices and other compositional elements rarely used by most of his contemporaries. Lübeck’s Clavier Uebung, written in 1728, consists of a single suite for harpsichord, with the traditional dances (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue) preceded by a prelude and fugue and followed by a chaconne. The S.M.G. manuscript from 1691 includes 45 short pieces for keyboard, many anonymous although five are attributed to Lübeck’s father, and it also contains the only known compositions by Lübeck’s son. These pedagogical pieces work well on a small historic harpsichord or clavichord, or on a small or regal stop organ. In fact, the dynamic markings in certain pieces indicate clavichord, considered to be the preferred instrument on which to learn keyboard technique. Their charm and melodic inventiveness make them a joy to play.
