On croyait cette captation de l’Ouverture de "Manfred" perdue, la voici enfin retrouvée, prélude enfiévré à ce concert lucernois dont le reste du programme était bien connu et fut parfois édité. Les zélateurs de Furtwängler auront souligné à juste titre l’éloquence de cette soirée du 26 aout 1953 où le chef allemand renouait avec les fulgurances de ses concerts de l’entre-deux guerres, et en effet toute une certaine radicalité de son art y parait, qui veut produire à chaque instant une émotion irrépressible quitte à brusquer les textes. Sommet du concert, une "Eroica" à tomber, violente, âpre, emmenée avec un panache fou dès les premières mesures de l’Allegro con brio. Elle culmine dans une "Marche funèbre" terrible de noirceur et un final construit comme un inexorable crescendo, cravaché, tout en élan. La 4e Symphonie de Schumann n’est pas en reste, si affirmée dans ses cadences, si rythmée au point que le chant s’inféode toujours à cette battue qui ne laisse rien dans l’ombre tout en suggérant des paysages aux arrières plans complexes : Furtwängler entendait mieux que beaucoup d’autres les subtilités si particulières de l’orchestre du compositeur de Genoveva (seul Hermann Abendroth l’égalait ici). Le pont entre les deux derniers mouvements reste toujours aussi surprenant, jumeau de celui capté au studio par Deutsche Grammophon. Si ce concert splendide est resté en marge de la discographie, c’est qu’on aura reproché au Swiss Festival Orchestra (aujourd’hui l’Orchestre du Festival de Lucerne), tout emmené qu’il fut ici par Michel Schwalbé, ne pouvoir prétendre à la cohésion des Berlinois ou des Viennois. Mais l’édition restitue enfin les bandes originales et leur acuité sonore change radicalement la donne, débarrassant des scories des copies précédentes la sonorité si puissante d’une formation qui fait corps avec la battue si mobile de Furtwängler, au point que plus d’une fois cette adéquation semble proche d’un certain idéal (Discophilia - Artalinna.com). A sensational archive discovery and two of Furtwängler’s all-time favourites: a live recording of the Manfred Overture (1953), presumed lost until recently and now released for the very first time, alongside Beethoven’s Eroica and Schumann’s Fourth Symphonies, remastered for the first time using the original tapes. Volume 12 of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL edition presents a sensational archive discovery: a live recording of the Manfred Overture from the 1953 festival, until recently presumed lost, and now released for the very first time. In 1953, Furtwängler also conducted two of his all-time favourites, Beethoven’s Eroica and Schumann’s Fourth Symphonies. Until now, these exciting interpretations were only available in technically flawed recordings made by enthusiasts. For this edition, the newly rediscovered original tapes from the archives of the SRF Swiss Radio and Television were made available. Wilhelm Furtwängler, invited to Lucerne for the first time in 1944, was one of the defining artists of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL’s first decades. From 1947, he performed in Lucerne each summer (with the exception of 1952, when he had to cancel due to illness) until his final concert in August 1954, a few months before his death (recording also available in the “Historic Performances” series: audite 95.641). In total, Furtwängler conducted eighteen of the festival’s concerts, sixteen of which with the Swiss Festival Orchestra who also played on 26 August 1953. Furtwängler’s motto was to be “faithful to the spirit” rather than “faithful to each note”. This Lucerne recording demonstrates his methodical approach, especially by means of a precisely calculated tempo architecture: Furtwängler’s seemingly arbitrary tempo modifications hold structural significance, dynamising the musical form. Illustrated with numerous photos from the festival’s archive, the 32-page booklet in three languages discusses this approach, whilst also referring to other famous recordings, such as Furtwängler’s studio recording of Schumann’s Fourth Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic, made only a few months earlier. In cooperation with audite, LUCERNE FESTIVAL presents outstanding concert recordings of artists who have shaped the festival throughout its history. The aim of this CD edition is to rediscover treasures – most of which have not been released previously – from the first six decades of the festival, which was founded in 1938 with a special gala concert conducted by Arturo Toscanini. These recordings have been made available by the archives of SRF Swiss Radio and Television, which has broadcast the Lucerne concerts from the outset. Carefully re-mastered and supplemented with photos and materials from the LUCERNE FESTIVAL archive, they represent a sonic history of the festival.
